Judo
Judo was founded in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano in Japan. It primarily evolved from the earlier art of ju jitsu. The main principals of Judo include “maximum efficiency with minimum energy” and “mutual welfare and benefit”. In other words, using your opponents strength and momentum against him and learning the techniques and progressing in a safe manner. Judo can be an effective means of self defense for everyone, no matter the size and strength of your opponent. The benefits of judo can be applied in virtually every aspect of your life.
Judo employs numerous throws, which include hip, hand, foot and sacrifice techniques. It also employs many grappling techniques, consisting of pins, arm bars and strangulation techniques. Judo can be practiced as a competition sport, or as a viable self defense system. Either way, it can be an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise and strength training.
Mike Darter started judo in 1989, and now has nearly 20 years experience in judo. He is the head coach for judo at OKCDT, and has a strong background in competition and instructing. He started OKCDT in 1999, offering quality judo to children and adults.
