Grand Opening 2010
On January 8th and 9th, we will have our formal grand opening, with featured guest Lance Wicks, from the United Kingdom. Lance is originally from New Zealand and has been involved in judo for many years. Lance is pictured above (middle kneeling) with Judo Olympic and World Champion, Kosei Inoue.
I (Lance Wicks) have been doing Judo since before I started at high school and have been doing Judo ever since. I started coaching and instructing under the guidance of my Sensei, Mr. Ray Roberts. I am a qualified coach both in New Zealand & Britain. I am a European Judo Union Level 4 Coach, I am also presently studying for a BSc. degree in sports performance at the University of Bath (EJU Level 5 coaching qualification).
I have been involved at all levels of Judo, from childrens club level Judo. I have been involved in both regional and national level administration and have been a member of delegations to commonwealth and world championships. Highlights have included coaching the Royal Navy and British Army.
My underlying “philosophy” is that Judo is fantastic and everyone should benefit the way I have from it!
The following scheduled events will be our grand opening.
- Thursday, January 7th- Junior and adult judo evening classes will be instructed by Lance Wicks.
- Friday, January 8th, Lance Wicks will present a judo clinic for adult judo from 6pm to 8pm, followed by open mat.
- Saturday, January 9th, Lance Wicks will present a junior judo clinic from 9am to 11am. Followed by an adult clinic with guest instuctors Brian Picklo from Matrix Grappling and Travis Serna. Brian Picklo will go over judo grips (kumi kata) and Travis Serna will cover groundwork (Ne Waza).
- Between the junior and adult clinics, we will be presenting several awards, including junior player of the year, senior player of the year, warrior award(s), and player of the month.
We will also have refreshments during the Saturday clinics, so be sure to come and bring a friend. The clinic will be recorded and videos will be available for sale after the clinic on our site.
