From Combs’ Blog we found a review for the new iPhone App “Smashmouth Judo”, featuring Brian Picklo, 2008 US Olympic Judo Alternate -220kg. Thanks Jon for the review…

So this will be my first review and while it isn’t going to be on a DVD, it might as well be. I recently purchased the “Smashmouth Judo” APP from iTunes. I really enjoy this app. A few of the videos inside the app show moves that are no longer legal in Judo (IJF Rules) and would result in honsokumake. However, in Freestyle Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No-Gi submission wrestling every video can apply. Here is the description provided:

Smashmouth Judo – Judo for Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Artists, is a video app featuring 2008 US Judo Olympic Alternate Brian Picklo. In this app, Brian demonstrates 8 throws that can be used in a multitude of combat sports, in both gi and no gi form. Brian was also a 2 time All American and Big 10 Champion in wrestling for Michigan State University. Brian currently owns and instructs at his own grappling school, Matrix Grappling.

Smashmouth Judo features nearly 30 minutes of HD video content, compressed specifically for the iphone, with clear audio instruction, all embedded in the app itself, so there are no streaming issues.

Assisting Brian is Mike Darter, founder of OKCDT Judo and The Judo Podcast.

Throws covered are:
*Morote Gari- Double Leg Reap
*Kata Guruma- Shoulder Wheel
*Te Guruma- Hand Wheel
*Koshi Guruma- Hip Wheel
*O Uchi Gari- Major Inside Reap
*Seoi Nage- Shoulder Throw
*Harai Goshi- Sweeping Hip Throw
*O Soto Gari- Major Outside Reap

Look for more apps coming soon!

Introductory price of $2.99 for a limited time only.

Each video is provided in both the Gi and without. I am glad that they show both. I believe that having the knowledge of both ways helps each side of your game. There may be times where, even with the gi, you could throw without using it. The videos provide the details and accompanying visuals that are needed to perform the throws.

I love that this is an app and I can take with me on my phone. This is where I think it exceeds the usability of DVD’s. If I am training and want to know what little details I am missing I can review it straight from my phone. Additionally, the clips include step-by-step detail with multiple camera angles shot in high quality video. All around, I really enjoy this app.

The only downside to this app is that I want to see more. I am really looking forward to updates in the future with new throws.

I sat for a long time pondering how to start this blog. There are so many important aspects of mental preparation that I could talk about. Where do I even begin? More importantly, where do I want to end? Sometimes you have to start with what you want to accomplish, which is the entire purpose of goal setting. Seeing what you want and planning how to get there. Now I know it seems trite, but I think goal setting is a vital part of success, without having a goal how do you measure when you have accomplished something?

It is important to remember that your goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely

Specific- Specific goals have a much better chance of being achieved then general ones. Saying “I want to get in shape” is not specific. Do you want to be able to walk up the stairs without getting winded, have less body fat, be able to rondori for 5 minutes without passing out? There are several different ways to take the idea of “in shape”. Many people I work with would say that I personally am “in shape” and according to their ideas I am, but to be competitive on the elite level of judo, maybe I could use some work. Use the “W questions” in order to be as specific as possible. Who is involved? What am I trying to accomplish? Where am I going to do it? When am I going to do it? Why am I doing this?

Measurable- There has to be some way to measure your success. A goal “to be good”, is not measurable. What constitutes good? Is good winning a tournament, hitting a specified amount of throws in a 5 minute period? Numerical values help measure your goal, how much, how many, how do I know it is accomplished? Outcome based goals are dangerous because they are out of your control. Saying “I want to win a match” is not a great goal because so much is taken out of your hands, you cannot control the ref or you opponent.

Attainable – A good goal is within reach; that doesn’t mean it has been set to low. An attainable goal has potential. I personally am not going to improve my mile time to 6 minutes in the next 2 weeks (I am a HORRIBLE runner!). It simply isn’t going to happen no matter how hard I try. Make sure your goal has the potential to occur, which leads me to our next letter:

Realistic – Let’s stick with our running analogy, in order for me to drop my mile time to 6 minutes I would have to put in an intense amount of running specific training. Am I willing to put in those miles? Am I willing to take the time off from judo to be a better runner? Do I want to spends over a hundred dollars on a pair of running shoes? The answer is no, and so the goal is not realistic. Now that may seem to be a set of silly questions, but it is reality. Someone who says they want to be an Olympic judo player is going to have to ask themselves those same types of questions. For any goal you set you are going to have to ask yourself if you are willing to do what it takes to accomplish the goal. It may be attainable for you to win Nationals, but if you cannot commit to the steps it will take to get there, then the goal is not realistic.

Timely - Goals have to have time limits. There are short and long term goals, and every range of time in between. Some goals may be match oriented; “in this match I will attempt a seionage 5 times”. You may set a goal to go to judo practice a certain amount of times a month, or long term, to be on the Olympic team at a specific weight class in 2012. Time limits help us to unconsciously push toward the goal.

The next thing is to write your goals down. Included in this should be all of the details we outlined above. When do you want the goal to be accomplished, how will you do it, why are you doing it? After you outline your plan, put it somewhere you will see it everyday, more then once a day if possible. I like to put mine on the bathroom mirror. As you start to put your plan into action keep track of your progress. Use a planner to track how many days you went to practice, keep a log of how many throws you attempted in a day. This will help you keep your accountable to yourself. Also, find a buddy with similar goals to your own. Your buddy will help to keep you accountable. I find in many things I will push myself further if I know someone else is counting on me.

Goals are the reason we play judo. We may have a goal that involves competition, fitness, or socializing. It is important to be SMART and figure out exactly what our goals are in order to get the most out of the journey.
